2004

Annual General Meeting of June 2, 2004 Click here to view the photos

Dear friends of South Africa!

In FoSA's second year, some truly remarkable projects were realized, thanks to the initiative of our most active individuals.

First of all, the Newsletter was upgraded with a Logo, colour print and addition of photos. A FoSA flyer was also launched.

We had some very interesting and informative events:

* In May 2003, a lecture about the SA writer and poet Breyten Breytenbach was held at the Department of Afrikanistik of the University of Vienna, by Prof. Heilna du Plooy from Potchefstroom.

* In November 2003, a South African Film Lecture Evening and Art Exhibition took place.

* FoSA hosted the lecturer, Dr. Edwin Hees, in cooperation with the Departments of African Studies and Nederlandistik of the University of Vienna. The art exhibition was organized by our administrator and artist, Chris Bayne. Chris also donated 20% of the revenues of pictures sold to the Student Aid Project.

* Further Fundraising Events were a South African Evening and Wine Tasting at Hotel Stefanie in September 2003, where we enjoyed a wonderful SA buffet and tasted some excellent SA wines.

* In April this year, the first big Fundraising Evening at the Floridita was a great success and generated an amount of approximately 2000 Euro. About 200 people attended, 2 bands played and the tombola at the end of the evening created a wonderful atmosphere.

We also had quite a number of social events, bringing us all together.

Apart from the Heurigen evenings, there was a Fun Run in the Donaupark in June 2003, a Curry and Beer evening, with excellent curries at the Salm Bräu in March 2004 and in that same month a trip to Venice.

In January 2004 FoSA's first Study Grant was awarded to a young 18- year old, first- year B.Comm.( Accountancy) student, Mr. Alec Nyokong. (All three members of the Educational Committee were present at the AGM- Prof. J.Loader, Mr. A. Fraueneder and Mr. H. Weissenböck- and Marie- Louise thanked them for their enormous input)

In May this year FoSA was very active in marketing the African Epic Oratorio UShaka, which took place at the Vienna Musikverein as part of the events celebrating 10 years of democracy in SA.

We have planned some further events to take place this year:

* An evening with SA writers (A.Brink, D. Hirson a.o.), in cooperation with the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna, envisaged to take place in December

* A concert with the famous SA singer Johan Botha.

The Cultural Working Group (CWG) is considering another South African evening with SA food and wine and the Fundraising Working Group (FWG) is planning more fundraising events as well.

This brings me to a question that has been raised some time ago, and which has not been decided on yet.

Members of the FWG and the FWG's chairman, Mr. P. Pulk, who unfortunately resigned in April this year, have proposed to merge the two Working Groups into one. This has been discussed by the FoSA Board, who will arrange a meeting with all the members of both Working Groups after the summer break, in order to discuss the matter and find a solution.

Our next AGM will be earlier in the year, that is in February 2005. I hope that our website will be used actively by our members, acting as a Bush Drum and a hive of information. Our webmaster, Ivan Smit, will keep the site updated and our website coordinator, Rina Loader, will assist him. If you have any contributions to the website, please submit them to Rina.

We've distributed the work more evenly amongst the members of the Board and therefore some new responsibilities were created. Our new FoSA Focal Point will be Wilma Kapfer. She will accept all queries from the constituents and potential members, forwarding them to the relevant Board members, chairpersons etc. wherever necessary. She will also handle the membership forms. So, if you have any questions- Wilma is the right person to contact. If you cannot reach her electronically, you can phone her or send her snailmail. Her contact details are at the bottom of every page in the Newsletter.

Terry Buchmann has been appointed Event Manager, responsible for planning a yearly programme of events for FoSA, together with the Board and the members.
